I can go back to bed & come back to the idea during my normal waking hours to complete the arrangement. I arm the track, hit record, and now the idea is out of my idea and “onto tape” so to speak. I can get an idea at 2am, and walk down the hall into my home studio, fire up a “band template” with all of my tracks labeled, plugins assigned, and panned, including my virtual instruments, and even if I don’t end up using that track, at least it was there and ready to go anyway. Do some sound design for all of that long before you track & set up your templates. Don’t spend a month listening to the kick drum to decide which comp/eq to assign to it. Set up stock templates, have your “Go to” presets set up, have your virtual instruments setup and then when you fire up the box, you track a very well rehearsed performance, and move on to the next track. I am always telling young kids that before you run loose with a DAW, get your feet wet old school.

I still used other plugins for some things (UAD Cambridge EQ for example for surgical work for example), but mostly stuck with the SSL and it worked out well.

Although recently I did decide to go with a channel strip across a mix (the SSL), but it was because it was a rock track that I wanted to have the flavor of going through an SSL board. Granted this doesn’t solve the “save CPU with less plug-ins” part, but it does solve the time part. So when it comes time to mix, I know what tools I want to use and don’t have to get bogged down in the tweakers prison. So while I don’t always use a channel strip, I do have my go to chains that I’ve learned for each instrument and context. Then when it comes time to mix, stick with what you know works to get the job done. Take some time outside of a deadline to use as experimental / tweaking time, and use this as a way to learn the different EQ’s and compressors you have in your arsenal. I’d like to posit another way to approach this same principle outside of a channel strip context.
